Hampshire Council of Governments Hires Sustainability Director

The Hampshire Council of Governments (Council) is pleased to announce the hiring of Eric Weiss as the organization’s first Sustainability Director. Mr. Weiss will lead the Council’s sustainability efforts throughout the region and will work to integrate green programs and services in the organization’s various divisions. Initially Mr. Weiss will work on a ½ time basis for the Council while he also continues to be the Administrator for the Hilltown Resource Management Cooperative (HRMC).

Mr. Weiss is a mechanical engineer, receiving his Masters Degree from UMASS in 1984 and has been active in the Pioneer Valley region on important environmental issues such as waste management, and recycling and resource management for the past twenty-five years. Mr. Weiss has also been Chairman of the Springfield Materials Recycling Facility Advisory Board for over 7 years, helping to oversee and promote recycling efforts in Western Massachusetts.

More recently Mr. Weiss has been an advocate of sustainability issues through his role with the HRMC and as the first ever Chairman of the Pioneer Valley Sustainability Network. “Between the effects of climate change and having only a finite amount of accessible resources we need to become more sustainable on a local, regional, and global basis. We need to use less and pollute less and I am excited to create programs and services through the Council that can help meet this goal” said Mr. Weiss.

The Council sees the regional approach to dealing with sustainability issues on behalf of member communities in Hampshire County as a win-win for all involved and an important way to assist municipalities in becoming more sustainable. Todd Ford, the Executive Director of the Council, also an advocate of sustainability, has made greening the energy portfolio of the Hampshire Power, which supplies electricity to over 60 municipalities and businesses in western Massachusetts, a priority. He also sees the Council as an important sponsor and supporter of green energy projects on a regional basis. “We are excited to have Mr. Weiss on board. We need to move towards a regional green electricity network and the County needs a coordinated sustainability strategy. With Eric in the fold, the Council will be the organization to provide this leadership” said Mr. Ford.

“This is a great opportunity to help make a serious difference in Hampshire County and I am looking forward to the process and to the results” said Mr. Weiss.
